The internet had given me a mask and so I started telling the truth. I became anonymous, a mystery. I began blogging about the true ramifications of surviving abusive relationships and rediscovering my sexual identity. I left my job in London and I moved to Bangkok where I wrote a short story every month for a year about the ridiculousness of my midlife crisis.
I wrote about many of the sex tourists and the functioning alcoholics who make Thailand their home.
I wrote about culture shock and the comedic aspects of trying to negotiate a whole new way of life.
What started as a simple exercise in order to improve my prose grew into an intimate portrait of self realization. Gradually, over time, it evolved into a form of sexy, cultural commentary aimed at intelligent adults with a sense of humour. Every week, thousands of people clicked on my sites, "50 Shady Gays," and "Magical Mre Tour."
As the political situation in Thailand became ever more unstable, the country divided into the red and yellow shirt factions. Following the violent military coup, there was a clampdown on any websites or publications that were considered to contain dissenting voices, critical of the new regime. My websites were blocked and deleted and the publication of my book, "A Year in Shorts" was dropped. I left Thailand and the book lingered in a rough, unedited, self-published form. Now the book is being translated into Mandarin and will be published in China, and so it appears to have found a new lease of life.
