He elaborates on the strictures the Christian Church inflicted on the sexual behaviour of its followers (and its clerics) which were imposed rigidly throughout the Middle Ages; a loosening of them in the Age of Enlightenment but re-imposed with vigour in Victorian times, and now, today – a situation which is confusing – equally to the clergy, the faithful, and the secular majority of the population.
Bill Larkworthy then has us accompany him through some entertaining vignettes of his early medical career as a young doctor to when he became a senior, super-specialist at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital, the royal hospital, in Riyadh, the capital of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Subsequently he dips his toes in the murky waters of the meaning of life and, carefully avoiding complex theories, touches on Scientific Cosmology.
Absinthe is back in vogue and he expounds on its history and the evil effects it had on one of its unfortunate devotees, Vincent van Gogh. His account of the history of wet nursing, animal and human, is a tour de force of research and whimsy – whilst in another chapter, ‘The Great Game,’ his observations and analysis of the dreadful situation in Afghanistan and the Middle East will not please George Bush or Tony Blair. Then being of a mature age, himself, he gives advice on how to deal with your life in your seventies – and your eighties.
Evidemment he is in love with Provence and the legends of its saints. Finally he pays tribute to the brave young men who fought in the French Resistance (the Maquis) in World War II on the slopes of the Giant of Provence, Mont Ventoux … fought not only the Nazi army, the Wehrmacht, and the sadistic Gestapo, but also fellow Frenchmen who had turned traitor and volunteered to join the Milice Française.
Bill Larkworthy’s wry humour emerges again and again, often with laugh-out-loud unexpectedness. His love of history shines out of every page and you can tell he has been used to doctoring and teaching all his life by his easy delivery of medical topics. It is obvious that Doctor Lark takes a lot of pleasure in being able to write about different genres in a seamless, entertaining and reader-friendly way.
